Robert L. Horst received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering with honors from Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA, and the M.S.E.E. degree from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.

Bob is a consultant and founder of the technical consultancy Peak Productivity USA, Lancaster, PA. He is a registered professional engineer and holds 26 U.S. and foreign patents on microwave devices, production apparatus, and manufacturing methods, and has authored numerous conference papers and technical articles (click for list). He provides support to industry in manufacturing methods for productivity enhancement and quality improvement, including six-sigma measurement and analysis.

His professional experience includes a three-decade career in research, engineering, and manufacturing at Armstrong World Industries. As research supervisor, he conducted physics research and manufacturing engineering on defense-related products at the Armstrong Technical Center, Lancaster, PA. From 1966 to 1975, he engaged in manufacturing project engineering including process computer-control development and implementation at factories in the U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia. From 1975 to 1985, he served as Senior Consulting Engineer and was a first recipient of the Armstrong Innovation Award in 1981. From 1985 until he elected early retirement, Mr. Horst served as Corporate Manager, New Manufacturing Technology, conducting operations research and serving as task force chairman for factory quality improvement and computer-integrated manufacturing teams. He was named to the Armstrong-Canada Recognition Honour Roll in 1988.

In addition to his election as Life Fellow of IEEE, Mr. Horst’s professional affiliations include Senior Member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), and membership in academic societies Phi Kappa Phi, Tau Beta Pi, Eta Kappa Nu, Sigma Tau, and Phi Eta Sigma. He is licensed by the FCC and holds a General License with Ship Radar Endorsement, and is a U.S. Navy veteran.

Bob is a past member of the Board of Trustees of Pennsylvania State University, and of the Board of Advisers of Penn State Harrisburg Capital College, where he serves on the Industrial and Technical Advisory Board of the School of Science, Engineering & Technology.

He was honored as "Engineer of the Year" by the Central Pennsylvania Engineers Council during 2008 National Engineers Week.
